Right-click on the Package > Android Tools > Export Unsigned Application 
Package

This was when I was trying to build a APK and transfer it manually to the 
device for installation, not running directly via USB.  I'm completely new 
at this, so I don't really understand what's going on!  I don't have a 
release key, and I'm not trying to develop stuff for general or Market 
release - I just want to make small mods to existing projects for my own 
use.

Your first suggestion to set a udev rule for HTC devices resolved my second 
issue perfectly.  I now have the app running in debug mode on the device.
