It CAN depend on your CPU and your link. If the CPU isn't fast enough
(as was the case with my old laptop) to handle speeds (again, with my
connection) around 4.5 MB/s (end-to-end throughput---not including
TCP/IP overhead), you're not going to get that kind of speed (my old
laptop could BARELY handle 2.8 MB/s). Now, with my Mac Mini dual core,
as long as the network is relatively quiet, I get around 3.5 to 4.5 MB/s
(again, as always, net traffic is still a major limfac).

Oh, and the last time I checked (about 8 yeard ago), the local network,
at least to the street corner, was all OC-20 and up...and their speeds
have increased by about 3 MB/s since then.... :-)

PS: Even at around 3 MB/s, my old laptop had to pause constantly to
clear the buffers and cache...then grab a bit more, pause again,
etc..... My Mac just cruises right along until it's done. So
the CPU can very definitely have a negative impact if it's not
fast enough to handle the incoming data.
