coaches an Agile standing team through all facets of the software delivery
cycle.    Facilitates SCRUMceremonies.  Provides capacity and demand
analysis.  Coaches team on Agile and Lean concepts. Protects team from
tasks that take away from delivery focus. Strong relationship builder.

An Iteration Manager leads standing development teams to deliver high
quality working software

through adoption of innovative best practices. The Iteration Manager works
in partnership with

project teams to deliver project objectives through structured planning and
leverages appropriate

delivery methods (agile, iterative, etc.). To improve quality and increase
software delivery velocity,

the Iteration Manager collaborates with various stakeholders, user
communities and project teams

to learn and implement best practices. They also perform peer-to-peer
coaching, training and

mentoring to improve process competencies across multiple standing teams.



*Role accountabilities*



1. Continuously monitors team throughput and/or velocity to achieve
iteration goals and

commitments; leads the team to deliver high-quality software

2. Uses technical and functional knowledge to remove roadblocks within the
standing team and

identify any technical risks that might have an impact on the delivery
(risks with architecture,

design, patterns, performance, security, etc.); communicates obstacles
requiring outside

resolution to the Project Manager

3. Facilitates effort or design estimates with the team to support
iteration, release and project

delivery within the Business Solution Area (BSA)

4. Collaborates with the line leads to provide guidance to the team in the
areas of analysis,

design, development and testing, and ensures that best practices are
leveraged

5. Helps to drive skill uplift through the coaching of team members

6. Ensures the team is ready to accept the work by inspecting the quality
of functional

requirements for release or iteration planning (business requirements use

cases, stories, etc.)

7. Leads iteration planning collaboratively, works with the Business
Application Owner or

Business Lead to build and maintain a prioritized product backlog

8. Facilitates retrospective, daily standups and show-and-tell meetings — to

encourage collaboration, communication and feedback within the team;
promotes a

learning culture in the team

9. Collaborates with the project team to create transparency into the
standing team's activities

and progress by supporting program/project risk, issue and change
management, and

status reporting

10. Drives team performance to deliver high-quality software by eliminating
waste and fostering an

environment of continuous improvement, including facilitating decision
making, conflict

management and protecting the team from outside forces and distractions

11. Continuously improves iteration management capabilities by identifying
best practices,

adopting consistent, standard work and coaching/pairing across teams



*Recommended experiences*



Undergraduate studies (bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred) in
business, management

information systems, computer science or a related field.  Technical work
experience in the IT field.

Understanding of Agile concepts, practices and values



• At least eight years of technical work experience in the information
technology field

• Two or more years of experience working within an iterative software
development environment

• Two or more years experience collaboratively leading an agile software
development team while possessing a solid understanding of Agile concepts,
practices and values

• Experience using tools like IBM Rational Team Concert, Clarity, etc.

every iteration

• Prepares and facilitates all iteration planning meetings

• Removes internal roadblocks that prevent the team from reaching full
velocity and escalates external blockers to the project team and
stakeholders

• Ensures that regular reflection of processes and practices occur via
Retrospectives



*Continuous improvement - *

• Works with Application Development Leaders to establish clear team goals

• Actively supports all retrospectives

• Coaches team or secures coaching for the team to support continuous
improvement activities

• Demonstrates an understanding of Agile practices and works to evolve them

• Shares best practices with peers (e.g., one-on-one, at best practice
lunch and learns or via written publication)

• Actively participates in a learning culture by allocating time to give
back through continued learning and teaching

• Contributes positively to continuously improving working software delivery



*Delivery & execution - *

• Coordinates and ensures the delivery of high-quality, secure code – on
time, every time and with near-zero defects

• Delivers according to project constraints and commitments

• Advocates appropriate use of software delivery methods/practices within
the team

• Uses technical and functional knowledge to remove roadblocks (e.g.,
integration dependencies), identify technical risks (e.g., architecture,
design, patterns, performance), drive working software, and understand and
manage estimates

• Uses technical and functional knowledge to facilitate the team decision
making process and elicit decisions



*Lean management - *

*• *Continuously monitors team throughput and velocity, driving performance
and continuous improvement waste elimination

• Secures coaching, training and/or tools needed for the team to deliver on
time

• Leads or actively participates in Lean activities with the team

• Manages skills at levels equal to, or greater than, those required for the

• Quality metrics, analysis & tools

• Coordinates the use of established standardized metrics and tools to
support delivery models and capability improvement items

• Identifies more efficient approaches to delivering working software
through team enablement, execution, visibility or other means

• Develops and improves usefulness and visibility of team’s competency
measurements

*• *Establishes strong working relationships with leadership and
collaborates with Business Lead/Product Owner Proxy

• Communicates effectively with business customers about technology issues
and topics

• Provides proactive insight into delivery risks and issues to project team
and stakeholders

business solution areas

*• *Identifies team and delivery risks proactively in real time; tracks and
identifies timely solutions to resolve issues or escalates them, as
appropriate

the practitioner community members and within the supported BSA

• Leads or contributes to quality or waste elimination initiatives within a
specific area (BSA, Nationwide IT, etc.)
