Exactly. This is not possible for security reasons. The user shall always be aware what he is receiving from other people and it makes malware/trojan-hores like applications harder to make.
However, I think it's possible to set an notification in the notification window, so the user is aware that an SMS is there and could pick it up (to open the integrated SMS application) and then delete it after reading.
