OP seems just to be starting out, so that's likely features on the
margins. I'd say common sense is for the OP to get started on the
retail G1 and if that doesn't cut it any more some time down the road,
OP can always get a dev phone later, <irony on>from all the money OP's
going to make with his/her app <off>.

Also... there's always a chance the telco's builds that are pushed out
to the devices are different from the advance/head branches anyhow.
This means a dev phone in its own right will not guarantee to relieve
the pain anyways.

All that said - good luck and enjoy / Android offers exciting
capabilities to the average Joe hacker like yours truly.
