Thank you for the offer - I got PS installed on a couple of my (non- Linux) boxen so I got around it that way. For the greater good I hope that some other format(s) will readily be available once one of the the GIMP-exclusively developers start working on widgets *). I don't feel like jumping in Google's line and post the straight .png's and sortof preclude custom shadowing or anything like that.
