I've added the attribute android:process=":MyAppWidget" to the broadcast receiver definition. Voila, issue resolved! Thanks a thousand times!
P.S. I've already got sufficient separation between the widget and the Activity, so running the widget in a separate process has no impact (that I've seen so far or that I would expect). I suppose everybody take note...
