I would disregard MrSnowflakes comments about not doing it. Android is an open platform and if you want to change the look of your app a bit, go for it. Themes are there for a reason and this sounds like one of them.
The fact that some look "cheap" is probably due to poor design. Who knows, it could turn out quite well so give it a go.
