Just had this renaming block again on another system, here running Windows XP SP3. Quitting Eclipse, manually deleting the platforms \android-1.6 folder, and relaunching Eclipse to run Android SDK and AVD Manager from its Windows menu again fixed the problem. Looks like there is something not quite right with the update package.
