Unfortunately, that won't work since the SDK/AVD manager will refer to the its own stuff (platforms, etc.) regardless of how you start it. I.e., you can't run the manager from one directory and have it refer to the platforms in another directory. Looks like the install process is basically broken and needs to be fixed by Google. Or I'm missing something here (really hope that's the case).
