I found the solution to my problem: Service.startForeground. This call makes sure my background service will keeps its priority when its running in the background. The SDK has a nice example that works across all API levels: http://developer.android.com/intl/de/resources/samples/ApiDemos/src/com/example/android/apis/app/ForegroundService.html
