Hello all, So, I am going to explain a little more what I have in my head...
My little brother, Maxime, is 21 years old. He doesn't speak and has never spoken. He has his own perception of the world but he is sociable and he understand everything we tell him. However, he is not independant and he still lives with my parents. He is very calm and can stay focus on a task if he is interested. He loves everything that makes lights and sounds! It is not difficult for him to use a computer, and for exemple, he is very good when playing computer games...! When he was younger, he had a system of labels which were attached to his trouser. When he wanted something, he asked with his labels... Very good idea, and he managed it well, but there were more and more labels, and it became difficult to continue with that! Then, he tried a vocal synthesis. It was a kind of box (40cm x 20cm x 3cm and about 1kg... Sorry, I am french ;) ) There were about 50 labels on this box and when he pushed a label, there was a predifined sound (for exemple, to say "hello, my name is Maxime...")... Very good idea too, but not easy to use at all! Finally, he tried B.A.bar (http://www.fst.ch/babar/)... Another vocal synthesis based on the usage of barcode... A word is associated to a barcode, and you have to scan it to speak... This is not a good idea for my brother who spent his time playing with the light of the scanner and recording various sounds!... I first wanted to develop an application who was based on the labels and the first vocal synthesis principle, but more user-friendly... I thought about a pocket-pc, but this is a closed platform, and I do not have knowledge in .net... I would like to have a product that would be small, simple... for both user and administrator... Here are the functionnalities I thought about: 1. A simple interface that allows to associate pictures (or words) to sounds, ordered by categories and easily accessible (touch screen and big pictures...) 2. The plateform would have to be locked on restricted applications (no way to use it as a recorder or game, or other thing...) 3. An easy admin interface that would allow administrator to manage sounds, pictures, words, categories... 4. Why not developping an application that could call a phone number in case of emergency (home...) so that he could try to make things by himself... 5. And finally, but that's complitely hypothetical, develop an application that could synthetize a voice from the sounds he can make with his own voice (laugh, cry...) I am not sure this is possible to make it, but I hope so... So... I think I have summerized everything... Do you thing I should propose a project? I am able to lead it, but I am not sure about the way to do it...
