Mark points out something I neglected to mention - that the GeoPDF
spec has only just recently been submitted as an open standard
(presumably at least as open as the PDF spec it builds on). I didn't
realize you can't seem to get this spec right now (whereas the GeoTIFF
one is available - http://www.remotesensing.org/geotiff/geotiff.html).
So I agree, GeoTIFF makes more sense to implement first and then
GeoPDF could follow if the format is opened up fully. It is very easy
to get all GeoTIFFs too for the US, but not directly through USGS as
far as I know, e.g. at http://www.archive.org/details/maps_usgs.

I just discovered a thread of wanting a similar feature (and more) for
the iPhone at
http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8300945231/m/149002204931.

But as to not ignore the thread I jumped on, I also took a look at
the .gpx format which I presume is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPX_(data_transfer).
I also would want to view these maps on an Android phone. And in
particular, I'd most want to view these maps as overlays on top of
GeoTIFF or GeoPDF quads.

The post I referred to about future USGS GeoTiff files is
http://www.gisuser.com/content/view/13265/ - an interesting read.

Also of interest is the response I got in this GeoPDF blog:
http://geopdf.blogspot.com/2008/10/mobile-for-people.html.

By the way Mark, I like the look of your book and that you offer a
free code download. I look forward to trying out your code on an
emulator (which I haven't yet installed). Would you be willing to
create an index.htm file for your source zip download with a brief
overview of the projects? This would let people figure out what
project they want to look at. I'll probably look at Maps/NooYak given
my main interest.
