My main reason for paying was that T-Mobile reception is non-existent for 3G and OKish for 2G where I live, so in order to do realistic testing I needed to use another network offering decent 3G reception.
My experience has been that free unlocking for UK carriers usually only occurs after the minimum contract period has expired, so if you can wait you can get it for free.
