It would also be nice if the market could inform us of new versions of the 
apps we have downloaded - rather than every app having to implement this

Here's one thought: Add another type of rating - "Update Relevance".
That would enable the social network to compensate for intentional
noise in the update frequency signal.

I do think that a richer rating and searching mechanism will be
healthy for the market.

I would also guess that there is at least one in the works. I would
not be surprised to hear that there are several underway - both inside
and outside Google. That development, underway as I'd guess it is, is
