1. You definitely can buy the phone sans contract but your going to
pay the full retail price ($400+tax I believe). My friend did just
that and got the unlock code to use it with AT&T.
2. After you create/sign in to your google account, it acts like a
regular G1 without the phone part. Everything else still works the
same.
3. I just tried booting my G1 with no SIM card and it wasn't able to
locate my position in Google Maps. You might be able to get away with
putting in the included SIM card without it being activated, but its
not going to work without a card.
