Hi! I'm a developer thinking about building a free app or two for the
G1. I'm glad to buy the hardware, but I already have a phone I like just
fine, and T Mobile's service at my house is terrible, so I'm not
interested in signing a contract for phone service I couldn't use. So
three questions for the crowd:
* Is there a way for me to just buy the G1 without phone service for
a reasonable price?
* If I do that, do the data, GPS, and and accelerometer APIs work
just the same?
* If I don't have phone service, does the radio tower pseudo-GPS
continue to work?
Just to head off the obvious question about using the simulator, the
apps I'm hankering to build are driven by location. The UI details will
depend a lot on the responsiveness of the GPS and accelerometer as
people walk around and move the device in real-world conditions, so I'll
need to try out the real hardware as I design my UIs.
I figure there has to be some sort of developer program, but I couldn't
turn up anything despite lots of rummaging on T1 and Google sites plus
various blogs and forums.
Thanks,
William
