Hello there!

This morning I received my unlocked G1 and have been using it with
O2. Everything is working correctly and I have come to consider the
issue of updates and what my strategy should be for handling them.

This are the facts and my ideas and any recommendations, advice, or
insight would be gratefully received.

1.) My G1 is unlocked and working fine on O2 (including 3G)
2.) My current firmware is TC5-RC7
3.) T-Mobile (UK) have said that they are pushing out RC8 this week
4.) The update process involves T-mobile (UK) sending an SMS
indicating an update is ready, which the G1 reads and hides from the
user, then proceeds to download the update before offering it for
installation.
5.) Clearly on O2, I'm not going to receive that SMS, the person who
sold me their unwanted G1 is.
6.) The TC5-RC7 firmware includes the security glitch, and my phone
will reboot in response to entering it at the unlock screen, so I
could get root if I wanted to.

As I see it, the only way to update my phone is to follow instructions
that I've found to manually update it with the American (RC29). From
all reports this will work, and at least this will give me an upgrade
path as I notice that it appears on the official Android site for
download. Presumably future upgrades will also be available this way.

Alternatively, if I get hold of the copy of the T-Mobile (UK) TC8
update then I could update the phone manually myself using well known
non-root methods. This would be my preferred method, especially as
future updates my localise the language content some more for an
Englishman like myself.

Why questions are, does T-Mobile HAVE to publicly make the update
available given the open source licensing? Is there anyone else in
this situation? What would you do? Is there anything else I could do
that I've missed?
