I noticed on the early Calendar app that I could not bring up the Calendar at all, even just to add my own appointments, unless it 'synced' with a Google calendar first. The phone is definitely geared towards Google interaction.
Marketing-wise, each phone manufacturer is attempting to get customers to use their own sites, to capture after-sale dollars (like Nokia's OVI.com website). Each Carrier has the exact same ambitions. So Google, steering Android customers to the Google site, might be a good or bad thing: If each phone mfg and carrier gets a cut of any after- sales action, and if Google provides all the mobile services (calendar, contacts, email, add-on-sales, music download, social networking etc) then it could save each mfg and carrier from having to create and maintain their own sites to capture that revenue. If, however, Google is seen as cutting into their after-sale revenue stream, or if Google provides some services but not all (just enough to be painful), it will cause friction against Google's momentum. With the device profit margins shrinking and with the competition for service pricing, after-sale money will become hugely important. I trust the Google plan is well thought out and executed.
