Some badly programmed apps do linger around. I have loads of apps downloaded
too, and I believe at least one of em causes the same pain in the ass
effect.
But this doesn't happen always, I think it might be in which sequance or of
which app we use in conjuction with the browser or the app we used just
before the browser.

similar processing in the background.

And someone can correct me if I am completely wrong here, just because you
return to the home screen doesn't mean that the application you were just in
suddenly stops processing and dies.  It may be doing some cleaning up,
caching, destructor functions.  Then things hang around for garbage
collection.
