Although you will need 3G if you want to browse the web or use any apps that
ping out while talking....say while you are on HOLD or checking something
real quick during a conversation.

My understanding is 2G/Edge can't support both voice & data concurrently.

The use of 2G vs 3G is of dubious use in saving battery, it depends on
your usage characteristics. 3G should be more power efficient per
byte, but 2G has a lower peak power usage. So, if whatever you're
loading can use the speed of 3G, its actually the better bet. On the
other hand if it can't utilize the bandwidth, or if you're doing
relatively small transfers 2G can be the better route in terms of
power.
