I can use the web browser and the built-in music app without the music stopping, even on quite heavy sites like the New York Times. So I wouldn't say the G1 is weak.
However, it's quite easy to install apps that end up taking lots of background memory, especially if a few apps are running stuff in the background then the OS won't know which one to kill when it runs out of space, there doesn't seem to be any bonus for playing audio. If you have a lot of apps installed try removing some of them.
