Hi originalman20,

Here is my take on cupcake. My understanding is that there is no
guarantee that cupcake will work on a G1. Plenty of people have
installed it to see how it works, but I think it is fair to say that
it seems to be a long way off. Even if this conclusion is wrong, I
believe a rooted version of cupcake will be available fairly soon
after it is released.

Finally, as a root user, you can always reflash your G1 to have the
original release candidate (now RC30 in the US). This would allow you
to get the cupcake update just like everyone else.

My comments in this thread are not to promote root access for
everyone, but rather to point out that a rooted RC30 allows users to
enable features that make the phone much better than it is currently.
These features would ideally be available to non-root users as well.
If these features were already available, T-Mobile and Google would
have a big hit in their hands (an actual iPhone competitor)--much
bigger than they have currently. Also, fewer people would be seeking
root access.

Keep in mind that getting root can be a scary and potentially risky
operation. Follow directions very closely, or you might end up with an
expensive plastic brick.
