You realize the google email maintainer basically walked in, said "sorry,
I'm in charge, there will be no new mailer. I've got secret papers I can't
show you so we won't do it." and left..?

I'm pretty sure that AOSP could be successfully forked to include an actual
community-driven build, but all it would mean is that its behind in hardware
support, missing google apps and generally just a royal PITA all around.
