Saturday morning (7 March) I was surprised to find an "update
available" message on my G1. My surprise was due to having bought my
G1 on Ebay and then unlocking it to run on Orange UK. I'd presumed
that the update would only be available to phones still connected to
TMobile.

The good news is that the update worked and my phone is now RC9. The
bad news is that I temporarily lost 3G/GPRS access until I deleted my
APN entry for Orange and recreated it with exactly the same details!
The less surprising news is this update doesn't appear to offer any
new features - apart from automatically detecting when Market
application updates are available and Sim Toolkit. No latitude in
Google Maps but if you browse to www.google.co.uk Classic (not
iGoogle) you are asked to download Google Gears and then that page
displays "My Location: XXX". Since I can't access Latitude, not even
online, I cannot tell if the data is getting into Google's central
servers.
