Bear in mind that "open source" and "community built" are not the same thing. "Open source" is a statement of licensing, plain and simple. On that score, IMHO, Android has done fairly well. "Community built" (what I call "collaborative development") does not need open source -- industry consortia and the like collaboratively develop software all the time under proprietary licenses. Conversely, open source does not dictate that the software must be collaboratively developed -- there are plenty of projects that at least start out in the "toss the bits over the wall" model. On the "community built" front...let's just say that there's a long road ahead of us for Android. This is not significantly different than the early months of Netscape (now Mozilla), or OpenOffice.org, or Real Networks' Helix, etc. In another example, Google's GWT took the slow boat to true collaborative development, but things are humming along better now AFAICT. > Interesting article on the subject: > http://andblogs.net/2009/04/android-and-open-source/ I fail to see how the use of invective like "hatred" will help get us greater collaborative development. But, hey, that's just me. -- Mark Murphy (a Commons Guy) http://commonsware.com | http://twitter.com/commonsguy Warescription: Three Android Books, Plus Updates, $35/Year --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Discuss" group.
