No, they probably make money on all the eyeballs directing end users to google services by default, many of which are baked into the APIs.
Let's not kid ourselves into some notion of Google's great altruism here... I believe all the folks working on the project at Google have great intentions, but Google is and will be a publicly held corporation that has a responsibility to its stockholders.
