The problem is that it has always been very difficult for third
party developers to make money in the consumer space, and just having
new platforms and a distribution channel has not changed the
situation. It appears that there is only limited demmand for purchased
third party applications for any type of device, and nothing Apple or
Google , or RIM does will change this basic fact. I don't think the
subscription model will help, this has been tried for years in the
consumer space, and has never really worked very well. The write once
run everywhere paradigm is also flawed, you can't take advantage of
platform specific look and feel, and use platform specific features,
and have the code run many different platforms. Anyone who has
developed on multiple platforms clearly understands this. On a
positive note these new platforms open up a lot of great possibility
for vey useful business applications, and this is a viable business
model for some third party developers.
