Well, I am not sure if it is possible at all to earn money on the Android
platform. I mean so much money that it could sustain the development of the
next app.
Anyways. To earn money with ads you need a huge installed base. I think not
even on the iPhone this is a particular sustainable model.
Let's just say that you get 2 cents per click. One out of thousand views
yield a click. So that would be 50.000 views to get a $.

Regarding AdMobs. I used it for some time and it took me initially < 30
minutes to get it up and running. So there is not a big time investment
upfront.
Of course, you will get commenters complaining about the ads even if you use
them very unobtrusively. But you would also get commenters complaining if
you dare charging for your app.

And you can only charge for your app when you are in the US and UK.

If you're in it for the money, Android might not be the right platform.
