I was running the 1.5 restore image from the HTC site, and the problem was only occurring on the cell network, but it seems to be getting a lot better again which is somewhat vindicating the idea that it was a network problem. I haven't had any disconnections in more than eight hours.
Surfing by IP didn't work, only pinging, but if it was a network problem you can expect weird things to occur. I honestly don't trust the mobile network technicians here, they seem incompetent. If it happens again I'll try to get a tcpdump. :) Thanks for all the help so far, but if anyone knows how to switch it to a British locale I'd be grateful (so I get the .co.uk variations of sites when using apps).
