Great Question, this should open a big debate...most of the big players (established ISVs) are not building apps for mobile in general. I deal with many of these companies daily and I'll tell you what I hear, see and feel:
First...they ask where the money is; however what they are really saying is how do we make millions selling an app for $2.99, or less? Second...fragmentation, what OS/platform do they build for first, and if revenue numbers are not met they will not get funding for the port to the next OS/platform. Third…they have endless debates about when to cannibalize their current apps, and greatly reduce the price in order to sell into mobile Forth…there is always a set of companies that flounder or go out of business when there is a c-level change in technology or markets and in this case mobile has introduced both Fifth…they don’t have the talent base, not only in their development departments but their PMs and Exec Management thinks that smart phones are small PCs..they are NOT. Sixly…many people do not understand very small margin/very high volume business models; the telecom industry has made trillions of $ charging pennies per minute, per message, etc. Lastly…the economic downturn as cut budgets and projects across the board, many of these companies lost 70% of their stock value just because the market has had such deep loses.
