Thanks, lbcoder. That's the closest I've got to an answer so far.
Unfortunately I don't have root (part of the reason I want to format
is to get root...). I take it you don't have any other suggestions for
non root users?

Could I possibly pay someone (rentacoder.com?) to modify the source
for the email app to export my mail? Or is there some security feature
that stops forks of apps accessing the original apps data?
