Best I can suggest then is to forward all your emails to yourself. Assuming that there is no such function in the program already.
The problem is in the unix security permissions. Each program has its own user account on the system, and each program's private data is restricted to that user's access rights... or root. If you were to use a modified version of the email program... I doubt that would work. I haven't actually tried this, but I believe that it would be necessary for the modified version to be signed with the same private key as the original was signed with, otherwise the system won't allow the "update".
