You can use it on other 3G networks that have the same 3G system
tmobile has.

The other nationwide GSM network in the US, AT&T's, uses an
incompatible 3G system, meaning you would get voice and low-rate data
but not have 3G.

In other words, even unlocked GSM phones aren't as portable as one
would like, once 3G becomes a consideration.
