Your 'My Downloads' list is preserved between factory resets. It's only
small consolation, I know.

What happens when you try?

For what it's worth, I locked myself out of my phone many times through
the use of quite ill-advised patterns, and never found it broken. This
was mostly pre-1.5, but some might well have been afterwards.

AFAIK, 1.5 'fixes' the root access that this relies on.
