I really hope this is the appropriate forum to discuss my issues with
this phone. And hopefully, some of you can assist me in making my
experience more positive. There are several reasons why I choice
Android over iPhone and why I abandoned my HTC Touch (Win Mobile). I
am very interested in the opportunity to develop apps for this new and
Open Source OS. I should admit, I acknowledge that I am an early
adopter and I expect this phone isn't going to be perfect (yet).

However, after two weeks.... I am quite frustrated for the following
reasons:

- Within 3 days, a coworker permanently locked me out of my phone b/c
of a bug in the gesture security (too many attempts on Pattern
unlock). When it is locked out (v 1.5), it will ask for your gmail
credentials but cannot/will not authenticate! Many people have
experienced this bug! I had to factory reset my phone!

- I am still looking for a PDF viewer that works well. The built in
one scans my entire 8GB uSD card for compatible files EACH time I load
it or click the back button to load a different PDF. Ridiculous! Let
me tell you where to look!

- I am still looking for a useable Outlook Contact and calendar sync
that doesn't force me to sync my Outlook to my gmail account. That
will actually transfer over all the notes, phone numbers, Outlook
contact photos... etc. Let me decide what is synced both ways... (i.e.
no problem syncing my Calendar to gmail BUT not my personal and
confidential Contacts!)

HTC Sync is nearly useless! I realize may be more of an HTC specific
issue but the Android team REALLY needs to release a good Outlook sync
tool. Every other phone manufacturer has something! And NO, NO, NO...
I DO NOT CARE ABOUT SYNCing with GMAIL. I am certainly not keen about
storing my personal/private info from my Outlook onto GMAIL.

- Another HTC Magic related issue - This is not a multi-touch phone
like the iPhone.

- No DivX (xVid) player (I hear talk of one... but where is it? - not
in the market!)

- WiFi doesn't work properly on a WPA2 with SSID not broadcasted. All
I get is "Not in Range, remembered" and can never connect. I have
several other devices (including two Windows Mobile devices that
connect fine!)

- Dumping all the apps into a single area is ridiculous. How can I
sort my apps based on function? Why can't I make tools, maps, games,
etc.... folders? Is there a way to permanently change this. I found a
few apps that help BUT I don't want to load an app just so that I can
see an organized listing of apps. I cannot be the only person who
thinks this is a problem, can I?

- The front/home screen is a mess on my HTC Magic! I really miss the
highly informative welcome screen on my HTC Touch (Windows Mobile)..
Better templates are needed. Is there an alternative?

-------------------
Android apps (in general) are pretty bad! Very few have the polish of
what one can find in the iPhone store.

Ironically, the Google ADC 2 app for judging the apps selected for the
new developers challenge is a really, really bad design! It makes me
really wonder about the Android developer group!

Problems with it:
1. Absolutely no scrutiny or quality criteria about what is submitted.
Many of the apps I reviewed either didn't work or worked very poorly.
2. Most come with poor descriptions.
3. You must rate the app and delete it before trying another
application
4. The rating system is limited to a few 'out of 5 stars' ratings
categories. No opportunity to comment or indicate whether or not the
app worked.

Please work MUCH harder at attracting the top tier software developers
to port their apps to Android. So far, there is much to be desired
when compared to Windows Mobile and iPhone. A $250K contest every
year is NOT enough! If you wish to continue doing the contest, offer
more prizes rather than one grand prize!

In regards to the current market, it is a sorely disappointing
hodgepodge of many incomplete and poorly written apps with overly
exaggerated ratings! The sort by popularity tab doesn't work. The
Android team needs to better separate the 'crap' from the high quality
apps in the market place. That is not to say there are no 'shinning
lights' So far, I am very pleased with: Advanced Task Killer, Bubble,
CardioTrainer, Color Flashlight, Compass, Compare Everywhere (not
perfect - needs lots of work), Google Sky Map, Labyrinth, MyCalculator
(cheesy icon but works really well), Teeter, Wapedia.
