Internal guts are virtually the same with the G1 having less memory. The only significant difference is with the slide-out keyboard. There may be a bus bandwidth limitation on the G1, contributing to "slowness", but last I heard that was speculation and not substantiated. Both may be rootable (although wrt the G2 (Sapphire I presume), it is a little more involved). Personally I own and use the G1, because I like the flexibility of using the external keyboard from time to time and in developmental use I sometimes need to be able to type commands when the softkeyboard can't be shown. YMMV.
