Ok here is what I know:

1. Upgrades are available based on units. meaning The Google
Experience G1 will never get the HTC Sense UI upgrade because Google
has the rights to upgrades on the G1 not HTC. Now with that said HTC
Sense UI will run on the G1 you just need a rooted phone with a ROM
running or designed around HTC Sense UI.

2. I have never heard of there being any issue with rooting a phone
because of the hardware. Android phones are rootable because the
Operating System is Open Source. By design all Android phones can be
rooted.

3, PhoneScoop.com and MobilityToday.com do an ok job but honestly
there isn't one site that is perfect, because they are all based on
rumors and leaked information that can always change. Example: It was
once said the Touch HD2 was going to be an Android Phone when it was
released but it was launched with WinMo, instead. I say read them all
and find a few that you enjoy the community.
