AFAIK the only devices getting auto OTA upgrades are "Stock" Goggle Experience devices (i.e. the ones that have "With Google" printed on the back), that do not have carrier/manufacturer customizations (e.g. HTC Sense). With all the other Android devices I have seen, you'll have to wait (or pray) that your carrier/manufacturer will provide an upgrade path (e.g. HTC have skipped over 1.6 for HTC Sense devices, but are currently promising a future 2.x upgrade for Hero owners).
So far Samsung firmware/driver support has been appalling, with the last Samsung Galaxy upgrade I tried killing the USB connectivity completely. We no longer support this device. Regards Mark
