All good points John, but I have to disagree with your implications
that reviews are not effective or necessary.  I see reviews as being a
great way to accelerate adoption and market penetration, all important
for attaining early market ranking.

Other things to consider:

- Regular releases incorporating user feedback.

- Create a Google News Alert based on your app's keywords.  This will
find blog postings related to the topic of your app and give you early
notification so that you can post a comment early in the list of
responses.  Post meaningful followup comments mentioning your app.
I've gotten HUGE play out of some of these, depending on the blog and
my positioned response.

Seems like grunt work, and it is, but spending a bit of time doing
this kind of stuff can make a huge difference in the life of an app.
