Wonder why they chose an ancient 4:3 CRT set to display in that article? Admittedly I'm running a 10 year old 53" Pioneer RP HD set which recently got a new lease on life by having the power supply resoldered (looks better than when it was delivered). Not for less than $99 but around $260 I replaced my first generation Sony Bluray player with a Samsung 2.x version which came with Netflix, Vudu, Pandora, etc. It can also play files on my computers. The thing this has done is change my viewing habits so much that I'm thinking of cutting my Comcast bill down to just Limited Basic and I'm not the only doing this. In fact I think much of the urgency the telecoms are having about net neutrality is that so many people are beginning to do this. Why watch some half-baked TV series when you can select a worthwhile movie from Netflix or Vudu? And recently the CinemaNow app was also added. The Amazon app is also supposed to be in the works for Samsung players too. The old TV cable and subscription models won't work anymore. Compared to Netflix and Vudu, Comcast's OnDemand is a joke. Those companies are stuck in some retro 20th century mode (sometimes I like to say 18th century) of doing business.

You can already get boxes for less than $99 that stream stuff including Netflix. For those who are wondering since a 10 year old set wouldn't have HDMI I also added a HDFury converter that takes the HDMI output from the player and turns it into component. Though one can still play Bluray discs over component, DVD won't upscale and the streamings services usually won't work in HD unless over HDMI. One thing that doesn''t work well is that the YouTube app won't serve the HD versions just upscale the lores 240p flash versions (yuck!).
