Just a guess, John, but the 40,000 difference could be users getting a new phone. You'd be counting them because of the Android Id, but Android Market is probably counting Google Accounts.

It just reinforces the fact that if Google doesn't release the formula for counting stats, then they are USELESS.... even if they were accurate. A stat without the formula, and questionable accuracy is less than useless.

The only formula I'm sure of is :
Android Market - formula - accuracy = A bad joke.

Sincerely,

Brad Gies

Unfortunately, for one key stat (number of actual downloads) the Market is the
only place to get this info.
I can tell you the market is off by a considerable amount in the
"total downloads" as well. For my app "Radar Now!" the market claims
1,756,717 total yet my server has logged 1,799,270 unique ANDROID_ID
devices using the app at least once. That's more than 40,000 more
downloads than the market is reporting. There are no other places to
get my app other than the Android market. Missing from my counts are
people who download the app and never run it, which has to be at least
some fraction.

If you want good statistics, regardless of the type, you'll have to
use a source other than the market. I guess that's a foregone
conclusion reached by just about everyone.
