You used to do web development? Do you know HTML and JavaScript? You might be better off with PhoneGap:
http://www.phonegap.com/ A friend of mine is using it, and he tells me that it's quite awesome -- and you won't have to learn anything completely new and different, since it's HTML5/JavaScript based (I'm sure you'd need to learn SOME things, but compared to learning the unique-in-several-ways Android SDK, the learning curve should be much more friendly). And as a bonus you can make an iPhone app from the same source code. And a Palm/WebOS version. And a Blackberry version. And a few others for good measure. The only worry is that it will become expensive when they come out of beta, though they're free for now at least. I'm a big fan of cross-platform, though I built my own solution.
