512M is no where near enough. I've had issues with a 4GB quad core machine due to swapping to disk during the compile.
8GB as a good guideline from my compiles. It's enough to get the compilation done in memory and some space for disk cacheing. Failing that I'd say 4GB is a minimum. The reason Gingerbread went 64 bit was because froyo was pushing the limits of a 32 bit address space (i.e. 4GB), so that should give you an idea of why anything less than 4GB may well cause you problems.
