Did you think about using server based activation tracking?

You'd need your own server(s) (which I believe you have), but you could take
the user through a process the first time the unlock app is launched/detected
which would store their account details & activation time on the server so they
could get a full 12 months as opposed to however long is left for the current
app.

If the in-app payment patent stuff hasn't been sorted out in 11.5 months you
could then release a 2012 version which users could buy and would allow
existing users to buy in to another full 12 months.
