Just because they are self taught doesn't mean they never attended a 
university. Google's usual requirement is a 4 year degree. I suppose that 
could be in accounting as well as software engineer. The average Linux 
professional doesn't spend much time learning binary sorts though and that 
kind of stuff is usually included in the interview. Then again, the right 
answer to the question: "Write the code to do a binary sort on this 
whiteboard..." might be: "Why would I ever need to know that? I just call a 
sort function."
