I think you're wrong about the social systems being adolescent. I find them 
quite helpful in keeping track of friends and what's going on in general. I 
especially like Twitter because of the brevity it forces on posters. G+ is 
useful because of the close integration with the other Google products and 
also the way it follows links in messages. 

There is a lot to offer in each of these social sites if you bend them into 
the form you can find useful. Personally, the postings on how often someone 
goes to the bathroom or what they had for dinner are useless, but they are 
really extreme examples. 

You might find something in these social sites fits your own lifestyle if 
you just gave them a try.
