It must have been something else you were reading (maybe a third party site?) that gave this suggestion... I have been developing for Android since 1.1 and have never seen this page change.
Plus the versionCode is only allowed to be an integer... The versionName attribute can be whatever you want, and that is what is displayed to the user... I have even done things like "1.2.3 Beta" for this attribute...
