My app has been out for over two years (with numerous updates along the
way). It's a genealogy-related app, which means relatively low volumes.
It also appeals to an older demographic, since people doing their
genealogy tend to be 40 and up.
I've always noticed a bump in sales in the December-January time frame,
which I attribute to people getting new devices during the holidays, but
this year it's been exceptional so far. Why the sudden increase? Well,
looking at the Google Play statistics the #2 device for my app is the
Nexus 7 and #3 is the Asus Transformer, with the Galaxy Tab not doing
badly either.
So a lot of new tablet users have come online. This makes sense given
the probable age of my users, as they are liable to be more comfortable
using a tablet than trying to make use of a data-rich app on a
smartphone, which they probably are not that interested in owning. So my
personal conclusion is that Android tablets are starting to pick up by
appealing to a wider demographic than the smartphones, and maybe app
designers would do well to think of more apps that would be useful to
such users.
I myself, at 66, am probably on the high end of the age range of Android
developers. Maybe I can think up some good "senior" apps! :-)
