You could have a small (C) listening server application that executes the command when it receives a message from your app?

This does seem like overkill, but could be expanded to make a sort of "advanced settings" app that allows you to control any properties not currently available in the UI, only from shell.

I wrote an application to set DNS from an activity but the only way i
know is to execute the shell command:

setprop net.dns1 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

but this command cannot be (officially) executed from an app.

Are there other ways to set the DNS?

thanks

It should be quite easy to write application that sets the DNS
or extends android settings for this. Unfutunately i am quite
busy at work, but when i get some time i can jump on this.
